Plastic packaging tax may herald reprocessing boom

Tyre recycler Wastefront has named Technip Energies as its engineering, procurement and construction partner to build its £100m tyre recycling plant in Sunderland.

Construction is due to start on the site (pictured) in the spring, with the plant coming on-stream in early 2024.

Wastefront said tyres were “a significant and grossly under-reported but major cause of pollution", with some 29 million tonnes of end-of-life tyres produced annually.

When fully commissioned, the Sunderland plant will have a processing capacity of 80,000 tonnes a year.

Wastefront has additionally agreed a deal with Technip to deliver its projects worldwide, with Sunderland being used as a blueprint for those to be built elsewhere. The Sunderland plan was first proposed in 2020.

Wastefront will also work with independent oil trader Vitol, which will buy the hydrocarbon products delivered at the plant from the recycling.
